Have you ever heard the phrase “think of a place that you can relax in and feel totally at ease”?
I used to know exactly where mine was. It was a riverbed in Scotland, near where my grandparents lived. When the well-water went dry in the summer and we couldn’t bathe in their house, we’d take our towels to the river and swim. It was magical.
In my adult life this memory became faint. My grandparents died, we no longer had access to their rented house. I lost both parents by my early 40s and my connections to our shared history. I had no sense of place.
In recent years I’ve lived in Brighton with my partner. We often walk the South Downs. And in particular the meadows of Wild Park that overlook the city and the football stadium in the distance. We’ve walked growing kids here and more recently an unruly Irish Terrier. This place has slowly crept into my soul with over-laying memories and seasons.
My latest prints celebrate this place, specifically as it appears in my memory and my interpretation. Where one family has passed and re-passed, making our lives, living our worries, fractures, and re-connections.
I hope these paintings evoke for viewers a sense of imaginary place and the emotions of hope, challenge, and meaningful connection with the natural world that is so fragile and precious for all of us…
